One of the exciting lighthouses along the shore of Lake Michigan is this one at Frankfort.The winter weather brings high waves which dramatically smash over the top of the long pier. There is a story also about the haunting of the town by the Spanish cook, Maria, who was sacrificed and tied to the mast of a ship going down so that the men could escape in her place.
At night, when the wind howls and also on quiet nights, locals say you can hear the moans and cries of the ghost of Maria. As a child the artist spent time with relatives in the then quaint town, and heard the sad cries of the spirit lost at sea.
